A WARNING

[This is the letter which Mr Chatterton sent to Wereta’s Hui held at Pakirikiri.]

The idea came to me after praying that I should write to you all in a loving spirit, to you who have gathered in this place. This thought came to me, as it has to most of your Maori and Pakeha friends who want the best for you. I am convinced that what you are doing does not come from God and will not result in good for the Maori People.

THE TONGUE

(Psalm 141.3)

The tongue is a part of the body which can do great good or great evil; the tongue is very small but very powerful. A person’s words are like a match which sets something alight; much firewood can be consumed by a small fire. Words fall from the mouth but they fall for many days. The words of a good person are like seeds which bear fruit even after the death of the speaker.

A CLEAN HEART

(Psalm 51.10)

Last Sunday we heard the call of God, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Today let us hear the prayer of the penitent heart to God, ‘Create, O God, in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me.’

THOUGHTS ON THE WAY

I ended my story last month with my arrival at Puketeraki, the home of Tame Parata MHR. I stayed in his house and saw this people, their customs and their occupations. This place is known by the Pakeha as the ‘kaik’, a shortening of the ‘kaika’, in our dialect the ‘kainga’ [village]. Only the name identified it as a Maori village for in appearance it was a Pakeha village – there was not a single Maori whare, their practices were Pakeha practices and they lived as Pakeha live.

CONFIRMATION

(See Number 55, September 1902.)

The second thing that a person must affirm when he is baptised and which he must re-affirm before his confirmation is ‘That he should believe all the articles of the Christian Faith.’

‘PRAY ALWAYS AND DO NOT LOSE HEART.’

Luke 18.1

Prayer is very important. There are many verses in the Bible about prayer. The good people in the Scriptures are those who pray. The Bible commands us to pray, that we should delight to pray. It shows us examples of prayerful people. And many things of great value come to people who pray.

CHURCH SERVICES AT TE ARAI

On 20th October the teachers at Te Rau, Rev F W Chatterton and Reweti T Kohere, and their students from the college went to Te Arai, Pahou, to stay for a week. They were greatly blessed by Ngatimaru and Ngatiruapani; their bodies were blessed as were their words. Every night a service was held in the meeting house, ‘Taharakau’, and the building was full each night.

‘REMEMBER JESUS CHRIST’

2 Timothy 2.8

(This is the first sermon preached by the Rev F W Chatterton in the Maori language. It was delivered at Te Arai Turanga, June 6, 1902.)

I shall try to preach to you in the language you know. You'll appreciate that I left a largely Pakeha congregation in Nelson to come to the Maori people.
