The main news in these days is of the shocking disaster that has struck San Francisco – an earthquake and a fire. We have written about them elsewhere. Neither we nor anyone in the whole world can explain this terrible event.

TE PIPIWHARAUROA

A few words of explanation from us to the supporters of our bird. An elder has written to us requesting us to publish the articles he sent and telling us of the anger of some elders from his area because articles they have sent have not been printed. See Rule 4 of Te Pipiwharauroa. We are not able to print all the articles sent to us by Maori friends. Most of those articles sent to fill up the paper are not of interest to people at large. If they were to be printed by us we would not be able to print overseas news or other articles which we want people to read.

THE HEART OF ENGLAND

Perhaps if it had not been for the English war against the Boers, we, the Maori, and other people may not have appreciated the heart of England, the spirit which dwells in the hearts of her children in every place. The muzzles of the guns which sounded at Ladysmith awoke the world to see that a new spirit was floating on the waves of the waters, the spirit which united the many colonies under the power of England one with another, all with a single parent set on the other side of the sea. India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Cape Colony, Natal and many other peoples have all risen up together.
