SPRING

Farewell, Te Pipiwharauroa, farewell! Since your time is near for you to mate. You and the flowers of summer emerge together; you are the markers of the year. The good things emerging in the flowers – the beauty to be seen, the scent to the nose, reminding the heart that, yes, summer is near! It is the same with Te Pipiwharauroa. He makes things known to the ear, penetrating to the heart, things for the spirit to consider. This bird sings beautifully, the publisher of the places and the times.

TE PIPIWHARAUROA

A few words of explanation from us to the supporters of our bird. An elder has written to us requesting us to publish the articles he sent and telling us of the anger of some elders from his area because articles they have sent have not been printed. See Rule 4 of Te Pipiwharauroa. We are not able to print all the articles sent to us by Maori friends. Most of those articles sent to fill up the paper are not of interest to people at large. If they were to be printed by us we would not be able to print overseas news or other articles which we want people to read.

TE PIPIWHARAUROA

As an outcome of the strong desire on the part of the Committee which runs Te Pipiwharauroa to improve the bird of the Maori people we have included pictures, the pictures of Lord Roberts and General Bridge, and in the next edition we will have those of Lord Kitchener and General Baden-Powell, the warriors of whom we hear from Africa. These pictures cost a lot. They are ordered from Melbourne.

If Maori people continue to strongly support our newspaper and our determination, then our messages will go out more powerfully, messages to instruct Maori.

[1] THE MINT [THE GOLD SMELTING OFFICE]

When I was in Sydney I saw the Mint [the Gold Smelting Office] where money is made, the god which confuses people’s thoughts. Everyone has said at some time: ‘The love of money is the root of all evils; in their eagerness for it some have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains’. For the love of money men have afflicted their bodies, they’ve destroyed their good names, they’ve cut the throats of friends, they’ve given over their bodies as slaves to the god of evil. But money can be a means of bringing about good for people, of doing great things for people’s benefit. Money is not the root of all evil, but love of money. A person is wrong when he makes money his chief, directing his acting and thinking; rather let him change so that money is his servant doing what he wants done.
