THE MAORI CHURCH.

On Friday, 26th November, the Rev F A Peneti went from Gisborne to the Ngati Porou area. The object of his visit is to stir up the hearts of Maori people to become involved in helping the Church’s work. The main help he is promoting is the provision of stipends for the ministers. This is the first objective, and from this others will grow. While Peneti was here in Turanga he looked into the funds available for the support the Tai Rawhiti clergy and found it is £7,560. The interest received from this money is £500. This £500 is used to provide for the clergy of Tai Rawhiti from Mohaka to Te Kaha.

THE CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE GROUP

During this month Pani Te Tau, wife of Taiawhio Te Tau of Wairarapa, and Hera Tarena, came to further the cause of prohibition amongst the women of Turanga. This is a new activity amongst us Maori people, but it has welled up amongst the Pakeha. These women are very determined in furthering their objective and the women of Turanga have been quick to sign their pledge and to set up branches in the districts.

At the meeting of the committee of the Synod of Waiapu on 17th of this month the names of those nominated for the bishopric were presented to the committee. In the absence of any other nomination, the motion was placed before Synod and passed. Averill was appointed as fourth Bishop of Waiapu.

THE TRUE MARKS OF A CHIEF

The words of a dying man are words of authority; if he is a chief and a truly good man then the tribe will hold on to his last words. There are two reasons for treasuring his words. First, because they are words that will grow in your heart. And the man who is dying has no deceitfulness with him; the things that concern him deeply are the things that will help his people after he has gone; these are what he will speak about. Secondly, as is the man so will be his words. He is a chief and a good man. His words are his final gift to his people.

BEING LIKE-MINDED

To be like-minded is a great treasure. It is something sown in the heart of a person. There are no peoples who lack someone prepared to do things for the benefit of the people. The benefit of being of one mind is strength. This is obvious: two are stronger than one, three than two, and four than three.

THE YOUNG MAORI PARTY [TE ROPU TAITAMARIKI]

At the Hui of the Te Aute Association held in Rotorua on 13th April past the constitution and the name of the association were broadened to enable everyone to join – men, women, young people and elders. Its name in English is ‘The Young Maori Party.’ The newspaper gave this name to the Te Aute Association. It is a very good name though and a name that is easy in the English language; it is difficult if one turns to the Maori version.

THE UNFORGIVABLE SIN.

People have thought about and questioned in their hearts the nature of the unforgivable sin. What is this sin? Christ said, ‘Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.’ [Matthew 12.32] These are serious words. The reason why Christ spoke these words was because his opponents were saying that his great works and miracles were done through the devil.

HON. APIRANA TURUPA NGATA.

We told last month of the appointment by the Prime Minister of Apirana Ngata as a Minister of the Crown, and so we are want to give a thorough account of Apirana Ngata’s speeches and actions and of his teachings, not by way of boasting but of informing. There are some people with hearts full of envy who see no reason why they should be happy at the promotion of Apirana, but it is an advancement of the whole Maori People; the conferring of this honour shows respect and admiration for Apirana.
